Walter Battiss was een van Suid-Afrika se innoverendste en mees gevierde kunstenaars met internasionale aansien. Hy was die simbool van die kunstenaar as verligte shaman en het dié konsep uitgeleef in sy uitgebreide kunswerke wat waterverf, skilderye, drukwerk en opvoerings ingesluit het, asook deur die skepping van sy eie land, Fook Island, met posseëls, geldeenheid en paspoorte inkluis.

Battiss is in 1906 in Somerset-Oos gebore, met kosbare herinneringe van sy grootwordjare in die dorp – tot so mate dat toe die Walter Battiss Kunsmuseum in die voormalige Temperance Hotel tot stand gekom het, hy werke geskenk het en later met sy afsterwe kunswerke vir permanente uitstalling aan die kunsmuseum nagelaat het.

Hierdie verteenwoordigende uitstalling sluit werke uit die kunsmuseum se versameling in wat die eerste keer in Kaapstad op die Suidoosterfees uitgestal word.

Walter Battis was one of South Africa's most innovative and celebrated artists of international repute. He personified the idea of the artist as enlightened shaman and realized this in his diverse expressive artistic practice that ranged from watercolours, paintings, prints, performances and installations, to the invention of his own country including stamps, currency and passports called Fook Island.

Born 1906 in Somerset East, Battiss held fond memories of his formative years in the town to the extent that when the Walter Battiss Art Gallery was established in the former Temperance Hotel, he donated and later upon his death, bequeathed a body of artworks for permanent display in the gallery.

This exhibition comprises a representative selection of artworks from this collection for the first time to be seen at the Suidooster festival in Cape Town.
